In AX2012 R3 there was a new MDM capability added which was built on top of the data migration framework. This allows you to sync data through SQL Master Data Management services into another AX instance or another 3rd party application however you manage your MDM environment. This is a quick walk through of the basic flow of syncing a customer from one AX instance to another so you can see the basic flow.
