There are times where you want to sell something in Dynamics AX but you don’t want to have to setup an inventory item and worry about tracking inventory quantities. There are essentially three options. 1. If you just want to have basic description you can use a free text invoice. 2. If you wanted to have multiple lines on the sales order some with inventory items and some with a basic description then selling a sales category is an option. The 3rd option is to use a service item. The different between a category and a service item is that with a category if you don’t need typical warehouse type processes like a picking process then you skip that process but if you do need that sort or process then use a service item. This is a quick walk through of setting up a sales category and processing it on a sales line.
